Everyone has a “handicap” (handicap, weakness, addiction) and no one is exempt. My main handicap is physical (MS), but people could also have mental, emotional, social, or spiritual handicaps or a combination of any or each. I may be physically weak, but mentally, emotionally, socially, and spiritually I’m strong. Mentally, I’m smart and logical. Emotionally, I know myself and can identify my feelings. Socially, I love and understand people. Spiritually, I have a strong foundation and belief in God as well as a respect for other people’s beliefs. I’ve attended many seminars, read several books, and learned a vast amount of things throughout my life; 47 years have given me many experiences. I’m a wife, mom, sister, and friend. School, church, work, and home have encouraged me. My life is full of knowledge and it’s only half lived!
I’m not defined by my handicap as well as my name – Jade with MS; no! I’m just Jade. To me, just saying my name is enough. (Philosophical me: Perhaps when a person associates me with my handicap they imply that they’re perfect.) One thing I’ve learned is that I’m far from perfect, and I give others the decency, respect, kindness, and mercy I want to receive. People are how they are but I can be however I want no matter how they are. I want to treat others with decency, respect, kindness, and mercy no matter how they treat me.
