I use to be just a giver. It was easy to give and I felt useful but I didn’t want to receive because I didn’t want to be “needy” and seem like I couldn’t take care of us. The trouble with my attitude was that I was lonely. I appeared to be put together and in control of my life but inside I very much ached for connection, friendship, and love.
Then I got MS and all I could do was sit and not do anything for long or at all. I was horrified to ask for help and to let people know the real me. I felt insecure and wanted to cry when receiving their service; I didn’t want to be in the limelight because of always being quietly in the shadows.
MS has been a part of my life for over eight years and looking back I can see many benefits from having the disease. One benefit is that it corrected my belief from feeling horrified to feeling love. The adage says that it’s more blessed to give than to receive but I think the opposite is true that it’s more blessed to allow ourselves to receive and to see the givers love.
One of my greatest hopes is that people allow themselves to *receive* kindness. Another great hope is that people allow themselves to *see* kindness including seeing and being kind to themselves. I love people and my biggest desire is for their happiness.
