The Power of the Book of Mormon

May 2017

This month’s message is “Pick a talk from General Conference” and I chose “The Power of the Book of Mormon” By President Thomas S. Monson (Prophet). The talk is short and pretty much entirely strikes me as I study and really understand what President Monson said.

Of all the things the Lord’s living prophet could have talked about he talked about the power of the Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon has power because it greatly builds or adds to our testimony of:

  • Jesus Christ. That Christ is our Savior and Redeemer; that because of Christ’s Atonement we can be resurrected and have eternal life; that Christ will comfort, strengthen, and help us when we turn to Him; that Christ is our best example; that Christ loves us.
  • Righteous, faithful people. People who were good and taught us many things.
  • Knowledge. The Book of Mormon answers questions of the soul.
  • Truth. The Holy Ghost testifies that the Book of Mormon is true.

Some things in President Monson’s talk that stand out to me are:

  1. We live in a time of great trouble and wickedness. What will protect us from the sin and evil so prevalent in the world today? … a strong testimony of our Savior, Jesus Christ, and of His gospel …”
  2. Joseph Smith was a prophet who saw God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. Because the Book of Mormon is true, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the Lord’s Church on the earth, and the holy priesthood of God has been restored for the benefit and blessing of His children.”
  3. It is essential for you to have your own testimony in these difficult times. Once obtained, a testimony needs to be kept vital and alive through continued obedience to the commandments of God and through daily prayer and scripture study.
  4. Prayerfully study and ponder the Book of Mormon each day. As we do so, we will be in a position to *hear the voice of the Spirit, to *resist temptation, to *overcome doubt and fear, and to *receive heaven’s help in our lives.

(Bold, underline, and asterisks added for emphasis.)

The Book of Mormon strengthens my testimony. New things stand out to me each time I read it. When finishing the Book of Mormon I start reading it again from the beginning – and read it every day – because it strengthens me and brings a spiritual focus to my life. I want to live with Heavenly Father in eternal life therefore I’ll do all I can to have an unshakable testimony.
