Always Retain a Remission of Your Sins

May 2016

Dear Sister,

This month is “Pick a talk from General Conference” and I chose “Always Retain a Remission of Your Sins” by David A. Bednar (Apostle). Elder Bednar talked about three ordinances (sacred, formal acts performed by one holding authority of the priesthood):

1. Baptism      2. Receiving the Holy Ghost      3. The Sacrament

I love how Elder Bednar reminded us that Baptism, Receiving the Holy Ghost, and The Sacrament help us to always retain a remission of our sins; and that taking the sacrament makes us clean every week (as if we’re baptized again) and helps us start the week fresh.

On one hand is receiving a remission of our sins when worthily taking the sacrament, but on the other hand is being born again – which is the true message of this talk.

Joseph Smith (Prophet) said

Being born again comes by the Spirit of God through ordinances.

and then Elder Bednar said

This penetrating statement emphasizes the roles of both the Holy Ghost and sacred ordinances in the process of spiritual rebirth.

I could practically quote Elder Bednar’s entire talk since it’s so well said, but here are a few more things that stood out to me:

  • Holy ordinances are central in the Savior’s gospel and in the process of coming unto Him and seeking spiritual rebirth. Ordinances are sacred acts that have spiritual purpose, eternal significance, and are related to God’s laws and statutes.
  • The ordinances of salvation and exaltation administered in the Lord’s restored Church are far more than rituals or symbolic performances. Rather, they constitute authorized channels through which the blessings and powers of heaven can flow into our individual lives.
  • “And this greater priesthood administereth the gospel and holdeth the key of the mysteries of the kingdom, even the key of the knowledge of God. Therefore, in the ordinances thereof, the power of godliness is manifest. And without the ordinances thereof, and the authority of the priesthood, the power of godliness is not manifest unto men in the flesh.”
  • Ordinances received and honored with integrity are essential to obtaining the power of godliness and all of the blessings made available through the Savior’s Atonement.
  • Each successive ordinance elevates and enlarges our spiritual purpose, desire, and performance. The Father’s plan, the Savior’s Atonement, and the ordinances of the gospel provide the grace we need to press forward and progress line upon line and precept upon precept toward our eternal destiny.
  • Ordinances invite spiritual purpose and power into our lives as we strive to be born again and become men and women of Christ. Our weaknesses can be strengthened, and our limitations can be overcome.

Being born again (baptized by fire, converted to the Lord) allows us to continue our eternal progression. I’m grateful to have the ability to keep learning and growing so that one day I’ll become perfect, like my Father in Heaven.

We hope this talk helps you see Baptism, Receiving the Holy Ghost, and The Sacrament in a holy light.

We love you,
Jade and Taleen
