Alma experienced many things in the 10 short years of his devoted ministry. He also taught many things and is a great example to me of his fearlessness in teaching about Jesus Christ.
Alma’s experiences during the first 18 years of the reign of judges:
- [1st year] Alma is Chief Judge in Zarahemla, Governor of the Nephites, and High Priest (Prophet) over the land. Nehor teaches false doctrines, establishes a church, introduces priestcraft, and slays Gideon. (Nehor is judged according to the law and found guilty, with fatal results.)
- [5th year] Amlici (order of Nehor) seeks to be King. (The people vote No but his followers make him their King.)
- [5th year] Amlicites battle Nephites then Amlicites retreat into the wilderness. Nephite spies follow Amlicites into the wilderness and to their great astonishment learn the Amlicites have joined a great host of Lamanites. Lamanites and Nephites have a tremendous battle in Zarahemla.
- [5th year] Just a few days after the tremendous battle, another battle occurs between other Lamanites and the same Nephites.
- [6th year] 3,500 people in Zarahemla get baptized into the church of God.
- [8th year] Iniquity enters the church. Alma designates another to Chief Judge and Governor and fully devotes himself to the ministry.
- [8th year] Successful mission in Zarahemla. Alma calls the wicked Nephites to repentance.
- [9th year] Successful mission in Gideon; Alma rejoices at their righteousness. At the end of the year Alma returns to his home in Zarahemla to rest.
- [10th year] Successful mission in Melek; many people are baptized into the Church of God.
- [10th year] Unsuccessful mission in Ammonihah (Order of Nehors.) Alma and Amulek are imprisoned and smitten–The believers and their holy scriptures are burned by fire–These martyrs are received by the Lord in glory–The prison walls are rent and fall–Alma and Amulek are delivered, and their persecutors are slain.
- [10th year] Successful mission in Sidom (Where the believers in Ammonihah fled.) Alma heals Zeezrom. Zeezrom is baptized into the church of God. Alma and Amulek go to Zarahemla. [Alma takes Amulek -former resident in Ammonihah- into his home in Zarahemla and administers to him in his tribulations, and strengthens him in the Lord.]
- [11th year] The Lamanites destroy the people of Ammonihah (apostate Nephites) [every living soul is destroyed]–Zoram leads the Nephites to victory over the Lamanites [and reclaims Nephite captives].
- [11th year] Alma meets the sons of Mosiah and to his great joy they are still his brothers in the Lord. The Nephites give the Anti-Nephi-Lehies the land of Jershon (East, by the sea.) hey are called the people of Ammon.
- [11-14th year] Successful mission in Zarahemla; Alma and Amulek preach the word of God.
- [15th year] The Lamanites are defeated in a tremendous battle [in all the borders around Zarahemla, because of the loss of the Anti-Nephi-Lehies. It was the kind of battle they had never known since Lehi left Jerusalem.] Tens of thousands are slain [It was a time of great mourning and lamentation among all the people of Nephi.]
- [15th year] Alma desires to cry repentance with angelic zeal–The Lord grants teachers for all nations–Alma glories in the Lord’s work and in the success of Ammon and his brethren.
- [17th year] Korihor, the anti-Christ, ridicules Christ, the Atonement, and the spirit of prophecy–He teaches [in Jershon, Gideon, and Zarahemla] that there is no God, no fall of man, no penalty for sin, and no Christ–Alma testifies that Christ will come and that all things denote there is a God–Korihor demands a sign and is struck dumb–The devil had appeared to Korihor as an angel and taught him what to say–Korihor is trodden down and dies in Antionum.
- [18th year] Unsuccessful mission to Antionum-(apostate Zoramites.) The Zoramites deny Christ, believe in a false concept of election, and worship with set prayers–The missionaries are filled with the Holy Spirit–Their afflictions are swallowed up in the joy of Christ.
- [18th year] Successful mission in the land of the Nephites . Alma and his sons preach the word–The Zoramites and other Nephite dissenters become Lamanites–The Lamanites come against the Nephites in war–Captain Moroni arms the Nephites with defensive armor–The Lord reveals to Alma the strategy of the Lamanites–The Nephites defend their homes, liberties, families, and religion–The armies of Captain Moroni and Lehi surround the Lamanites [so many Lamanites are slain that they aren’t numbered].
Alma’s missionary teachings:
- [8th year] To gain salvation, men must repent and keep the commandments, be born again, cleanse their garments through the blood of Christ, be humble and strip themselves of pride and envy, and do the works of righteousness–The Good Shepherd calls His people–Those who do evil works are children of the devil–Alma testifies of the truth of his doctrine and commands men to repent–The names of the righteous will be written in the book of life.
- [9th year] Christ will be born of Mary–He will loose the bands of death and bear the sins of His people–Those who repent, are baptized, and keep the commandments will have eternal life–Filthiness cannot inherit the kingdom of God–Humility, faith, hope, and charity are required.
- [10th year] The Lord will be merciful to the Lamanites in the last days–If the Nephites forsake the light, they will be destroyed by the Lamanites–The Son of God will come soon–He will redeem those who repent, are baptized, and have faith in His name.
- [10th year] The mysteries of God can be given only to the faithful–Men are judged by their thoughts, beliefs, words, and works–The wicked will suffer a spiritual death–This mortal life is a probationary state–The plan of redemption brings to pass the Resurrection and, through faith, a remission of sins–The repentant have a claim on mercy through the Only Begotten Son.
- [11-14th year] After Christ’s Resurrection He will appear to the Nephites.
- [15th year] The wicked are consigned to a state of endless woe; the righteous attain a never-ending happiness.
- [17th year] Christ will come. All things denote there is a God.
- [18th year] Faith is a hope in that which is not seen which is true–Angels minister to men, women, and children–The word is compared to a seed: It must be planted and nourished; Then it grows into a tree from which the fruit of eternal life is picked.
- [18th year] Men should pray and worship in all places. Judgments are turned away because of the Son. Mercy is bestowed on us because of the Son. Moses had lifted up in the wilderness a type of the Son of God.
Alma’s counsel to his sons: [18th year]
Helaman
- My son, give ear to my words; for I swear unto you, that inasmuch as ye shall keep the commandments of God ye shall prosper in the land.
- Alma testifies to Helaman of his conversion after seeing an angel–He suffered the pains of a damned soul; he called upon the name of Jesus, and was then born of God–Sweet joy filled his soul–He saw concourses of angels praising God–Many converts have tasted and seen as he has tasted and seen.
- The plates of brass and other scriptures are preserved to bring souls to salvation–The Jaredites were destroyed because of their wickedness–Their secret oaths and covenants must be kept from the people–Counsel with the Lord in all your doings–As the Liahona guided the Nephites, so the word of Christ leads men to eternal life.
Shiblon
- My son, give ear to my words, for I say unto you, even as I said unto Helaman, that inasmuch as ye shall keep the commandments of God ye shall prosper in the land; and inasmuch as ye will not keep the commandments of God ye shall be cut off from his presence.
- Shiblon was persecuted for righteousness’ sake–Salvation is in Christ, who is the life and the light of the world–Bridle all your passions.
Corianton
- Sexual sin is an abomination–Corianton’s sins kept the Zoramites from receiving the word–Christ’s redemption is retroactive in saving the faithful who preceded it.
- Christ brings to pass the resurrection of all men–The righteous dead go to paradise and the wicked to outer darkness to await the day of their resurrection–All things will be restored to their proper and perfect frame in the Resurrection.
- In the Resurrection men come forth to a state of endless happiness or endless misery–Wickedness never was happiness–Carnal men are without God in the world–Every person receives again in the Restoration the characteristics and attributes acquired in mortality.
- Mortality is a probationary time to enable man to repent and serve God–The Fall brought temporal and spiritual death upon all mankind–Redemption comes through repentance–God Himself atones for the sins of the world–Mercy is for those who repent–All others are subject to God’s justice–Mercy comes because of the Atonement–Only the truly penitent are saved.
