“Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”
A few words stand out to me and expanding on them with thoughts and scriptures gives me further understanding:
- With all thy heart: Not just appear but truly and authentically love the Lord God. “For the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.”
- With all thy soul: The Lord God is a spiritual being. My body is temporal but my soul is spiritual and focusing on spirituality is most important. “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness.”
- With all thy mind: Live so as to have the Holy Ghost as my constant companion; He inspires and prompts my mind with wisdom; trust Him without worry. “Look to the Lord in every thought. Doubt not, fear not.”
- Love thy neighbor: Turn outward. Who can I help today? (For in helping others I help myself.) Love others the way I love the Lord God. “When thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.”
The most important task is to: truly and authentically love the Lord God with all my heart; focus on building spiritual characteristics within me; live so as to have the Holy Ghost as my constant companion-He inspires and prompts my mind with wisdom-I trust Him without worry; and do all I can to love and help others.
